CNN —Tiger Woods delivered another solid performance on a marathon Friday at Augusta National to break the record for most consecutive cuts made at the Masters. A second round even-par 72 improved upon an opening one-over 73 and – with the projected cut-line at four-over par as he returned to the clubhouse – guaranteed Woods’ record-breaking 24th straight weekend at Augusta National. I have a chance to win the golf tournament,” Woods replied when asked by reporters what the milestone means to him. Donning his Sun Day Red apparel – released in collaboration with TaylorMade – at Augusta National, Woods rolled back the years at various points, starting with an audacious left-handed chip to escape the trees on Thursday. “I’ve always loved playing here, I’ve been able to play here since I was 19 years old,” Woods said.

Believe it or not, these are both sound bites from a golf tournament. A storm-delayed first round meant some players had to finish their first 18 holes Friday morning, exacerbating a grueling day. “Even the golf course was saying, ‘Get the hell out of here,’” Homa, chasing his first major, said. South Africa’s Charl Schwartzel clinched a two-shot victory at Augusta National in 2011, but crashed out after shooting 74 and 81. CNN —These days, Tiger Woods merely being among the field at The Masters is a story in itself, but the five-time champion insists he’s not returning to Augusta National to make up the numbers – he’s playing to win. “I haven’t got to that point where I don’t think I can’t.”One more Masters win would see Woods (pictured, 2000) tie Nicklaus (right) with six wins at Augusta National. Six months earlier, he had ended an 11-year-wait for his 15th major title at Augusta National. Mike Blake/ReutersEven if he doesn’t win come Sunday, Woods will make history simply by making it to the weekend. Woods has made the cut in 23 consecutive starts at Augusta National, a record he shares with Fred Couples and Gary Player.

And he’s got some constraints,” Woods’ friend Notah Begay III told a conference call on Wednesday, according to USA Today. According to Sports Illustrated, Woods played Augusta National last weekend with friend and PGA Tour peer Justin Thomas and club chairman Fred Ridley. Woods made his first appearance on the PGA Tour this year in February at the Genesis Invitational – an event he hosts. After admitting he had been suffering from back spasms during the first round, Woods withdrew during the second round, saying he was dealing with influenza. According to the PGA Tour, Woods has made the cut in 23 consecutive starts at Augusta, a record he shares with Fred Couples and Gary Player.

NAPLES, Fla. (AP) — Alison Lee birdied four of her last five holes Friday to extend a hot streak that stretches from Saudi Arabia to South Korea to Florida. Her 8-under 64 gave her a share of the lead with Nasa Hataoka in the season-ending CME Group Tour Championship. The 28-year-old Californian has never won in her nine years on the LPGA Tour, but no one brought as much momentum. Xiyu Lin, who like Lee is trying to win for the first time on the LPGA Tour, had a 66 and was another shot behind. 1 amateur a decade ago and then struggled on the LPGA Tour and her confidence took a beating.

The idea behind the Ryder Cup task force that was formed after the 2014 matches was to build some continuity among the U.S. teams. He had been an assistant four times in the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup. The key is to see whom Furyk, the 2018 Ryder Cup captain and now the Presidents Cup captain for 2024 in Montreal, selects as his assistants for next year. Former PGA champion David Toms was overlooked as a Ryder Cup captain, just like another PGA champion, Larry Nelson, was before him. DIVOTSRickie Fowler is one of four Americans to have been on a losing Ryder Cup team in Europe at least four times.

Incredibly, Hovland and Aberg were up against two of the biggest names in Zach Johnson's American team, with Scheffler ranked world number one and Koepka a five-time major winner. The 23-year-old Aberg only turned professional in June, has played only a handful of tour events and is the first Ryder Cup player not to have contested a major. Hovland, 26, had a Ryder Cup baptism of fire in 2021 when he was part of the team that was trounced 19-9 but two years later he is exacting sweet revenge. I don't think we could have done better," Hovland said of his partnership with Aberg that could become a key component of multiple Ryder Cups. The only bigger Ryder Cup wins in foursomes were 10&9 victories achieved in the 1930s and 40s over 36 holes.

1 Scottie Scheffler was left in tears after suffering a defeat of historic proportions at the Ryder Cup on Saturday. On paper, Scheffler and Koepka looked a pairing more than capable of finally securing a first win for US captain Zach Johnson. Both major champions, Koepka boasting five, the experienced Americans were facing a pair without a major crown between them and in Aberg, a 23-year-old Ryder Cup rookie who turned pro less than 100 days ago. It eclipses the previous 18-hole Ryder Cup winning margin record of 8&7, both inflicted by Americans in singles matches; Tom Kite over Howard Clark in 1989, and Fred Couples over Ian Woosnam in 1997. “Yesterday was an amazing day and we wanted to enjoy it because it’s not very often you go out on a full day in a Ryder Cup and don’t lose a full point,” McIlroy told reporters.

"I am disappointed to have to WD (withdraw) this morning due to reaggravating my plantar fasciitis," Woods said on Twitter. But in unforgiving conditions on a cold Saturday with heavy rain falling, Woods was visibly limping and made back-to-back double bogeys. Last year, in his second start after the crash, Woods withdrew from the PGA Championship after carding one of his worst rounds at a major tournament -- a nine-over 79. American Brooks Koepka leads Spaniard Jon Rahm by four shots with the third round of the Masters yet to be completed.
One of the pre-tournament favourites, McIlroy's disappointment dragged on into Saturday as 39 players returned to complete their weather hit rounds where the cut line was set at three over. Major winners Bryson DeChambeau, Sergio Garcia and Bubba Watson along with Jason Kokrak all missed the cut. Tiger Woods made the cut but by the skin of his teeth when good friend Justin Thomas bogeyed the 17th moving the cut line to three over. "I've always loved this golf course, and I love playing this event," said Woods at the end of his round before the cut line had been set. Couples also became the oldest player in Masters history to make the cut when the 63-year-old returned a second round two-over 74 for a one-over total.

With temperatures around 48 Fahrenheit (8 Celsius) and the rainy and windy conditions expected to persist throughout the day, players will be in for a gruelling session. If Woods makes the cut, he would tie Gary Player and Fred Couples for most consecutive cuts made at the Masters (23). First-round co-leader Viktor Hovland was one over through his first 10 holes before Friday's play was halted and six shots behind Koepka. After signing up with the Saudi backed LIV circuit, some members delighted in taking shots at the PGA Tour as they left their old work place. "If one wants to stop and ask why I'm picking on them, then I'm all for it," said Couples after his Monday practice round. "I just don't think they should bash the PGA Tour or anybody, just go play golf." Three-times Masters champion Phil Mickelson and 2017 Green Jacket winner Sergio Garcia have both been critical of the PGA Tour and the target of Couples' barbs. Speaking at a Champions Tour breakfast, Couples took a shot at Mickelson and Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund that is bankrolling the LIV Tour.

Woods and McIlroy, two of golf's biggest names who have both been vocal opponents of LIV Golf, went out off the 10th tee under overcast skies alongside former Masters champion Fred Couples and South Korea's Tom Kim. There are 18 LIV Golf competitors at this year's Masters, including 2020 champion Dustin Johnson, and while all did not schedule practice rounds on Monday those who did were also greeted warmly by the patrons. Former word number one Johnson, wearing a shirt with the logo of the 4Aces team he captains on LIV Golf, practised with current PGA Tour players Kevin Kisner, Brian Harman and Gary Woodland. Johnson, who won the inaugural season-long LIV Golf individual championship, was excited to reconnect with his former PGA Tour peers and said he does not feel any different being at Augusta National compared to years past. "I still play golf for a living.
